You can alternate pick simple riffs and licks at lower tempos but you struggle to get past a certain tempo if it requires picking onto other strings
You can pick fast if you tense up your hand and arm but that doesn’t work when trying to pick onto another string
You might even be able to generate fast speeds on one string with tremolo picking but you can’t translate that to actual picking runs
